James Byrne: Founder of Rainbow Minds

I’m James Byrne, the founder of Rainbow Minds, and I’ve dedicated my career to creating a safe, compassionate space for the LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse communities. My journey—both personal and professional—has shown me how important it is to be truly seen and supported. At Rainbow Minds, you won’t be reduced to a label or diagnosis; instead, we’ll work together in a way that honours your full self.

A Holistic, Person-Centred Approach

When we work together, I focus on seeing you as a whole person, not just addressing the issues or challenges you’re facing. Therapy with me is about collaboration—you know yourself best, so we’ll work side by side to navigate the tough stuff, build resilience, and help you grow in a way that feels right for you. My job is to offer tools and guidance, but the process is always led by you.

Supporting the LGBTQ+ and Neurodiverse Communities

As a queer person myself, I’ve always been passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ mental health. I also have a lot of experience working with neurodivergent individuals (including ADHD and Autism), and I know how gender, sexuality, and neurodivergence can intersect in complex ways.

I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families, including those in non-traditional relationships like polyamory. I’m also kink-positive and sex work-positive, so whatever your background or lifestyle, you’ll find an open, non-judgmental space here.

A Global Perspective with a Personal Touch

Alongside my work at Rainbow Minds, I’ve supported gender services across Europe and South America and spoken at international conferences about LGBTQ+ youth mental health and neurodivergence. But my focus is always on providing down-to-earth, compassionate care to the individuals I work with.

Authoring a Book for Parents of Trans Youth

Right now, I’m working on a book for parents of trans youth to offer guidance, emotional support, and practical advice. My goal is to help families become solid allies for their children, giving them the tools to navigate this journey together.

Community Advocacy and Education

I also run LGBTQ Wellness Ireland, a Meetup group focused on promoting mental well-being within the LGBTQ+ community. I regularly offer workshops, personal development groups, retreats and information sessions for organisations and the public on mental health challenges.

Experience and Qualifications

Before founding Rainbow Minds, I spent many years working in homelessness and addiction services, which taught me the importance of compassionate, person-centred care. I hold a diploma and honours degree in counselling and psychotherapy, as well as a graduate diploma in adolescent psychotherapy. I’m a member of the Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (IACP), the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH/EPATH).

I offer in-person sessions at 42 Mount Street Upper, Dublin and online therapy for clients across Ireland, the UK, and Europe. Whether you’re seeking support with gender identity, neurodivergence, or other challenges, I’m here to offer practical, affirming care that’s all about you.

If you’re ready to explore who you are, strengthen your relationships, or tackle life’s challenges, I’d love to help. Therapy with me is all about creating a space where you feel safe, heard, and ready to explore and grow.
